Sophie and Matt have done an incredible job to make this place that is only accessible by boat. They make you feel so welcome and Sophies cooking is scrumptious. There is a deserted beach to walk on and I loved relaxing in the hammock on the beach to watch the sun set. I have been traveling now for months and this will be one place I will never forget.
e-book Rain Forest--Hidden Paradise in Borneo
If you are looking for Borneo jungle and beach and tranquillity, this will tick all the boxes. We're a couple from Kuching who were in need of a total break from our busy city schedule, and found exactly what we needed for a getaway at Nanga Shanti: no piped music but only the sound of the insects at night and the surf; no ugly buildings but only the majesty of the jungle right next to the sea; no horrible queue for a breakfast buffet feeding frenzy We stayed two nights in one of three tents pictured below. They are very spacious, like circus big tops and we can easily stand up and move around inside.
There's a comfortable mattress, ceiling fan and hanging lamp, all run on solar power.
Borneo Rainforest Lodge - they don't answer - Kota Kinabalu Forum
We had our own private beach! As mentioned by previous reviewers, the food was unexpectedly delicious, given their island-like limitations. The dishes were simple but amazingly the best of their kind that you can find anywhere in Borneo! The big open restaurant with a conical attap roof is a particularly enjoyable place to relax with the most accommodating and charming host family Mat, Sophie and baby Lola-colugo. We were blown away by the amount of hard work, literally blood-sweat-and-tears, that they've put into clearing up the jungle and building this place from scratch and with their own hands.
Mat and Sophie are the real deal -- non-conformists who dare to live their dream We will try to return as soon as we can get a few days off again! Spent a night at Nanga Shanti recently and really wished we'd extended our trip. Mat and Sophie were really gracious and friendly, and we felt very at home and welcome here, right from the moment we landed. We stayed at the longhouse - the rooms were basic but comfortable enough, although we spent most of our time lounging in the hammocks outside, enjoying the sea view and the amazing full moon that night!
Special mention must be made about the shared bathroom and washroom - both were super-spacious and well thought-out in design and very clean and comfortable, didn't expect a bidet hose next to the toilet thanks! Sophie bakes quiches and tarts, on top of making the bread and home-made jams, and we particularly enjoyed the lemon meringue and dark chocolate tarts, as well as the soursop and cinnamon mango jam that we had with bread for breakfast.
The banana flower salad we had for lunch was also fantastic. Didn't manage to trek or kayak but looking forward to going back to do both. The beach we landed on before going up through the entrance of the property is gorgeous, and even though the entire place is relatively near Kuching, it really does feel so very far away from the hustle and the bustle and pollution, and is truly ideal for those seeking to unplug and unwind away from the city.
During the two nights I spent in Nanga Shanti, I was surrounded by the sounds of a pristine jungle, in front of an untouched white sandy beach with many rocks but no sand-flies and I enjoyed swimming in the sea. Even if I was only 30 kilometres away from Kuching, I had the feeling to be like Robinson Crusoe in his island, but with the comfort of a nice small room in a four bedrooms bungalow looking as a traditional small Sarawakian longhouse. Matt and Sophie, a French and English speaking couple, provided an excellent dinner and breakfast with tasty homemade bread and wonderful marmalades.
I wish I will come back for a longer time next year and I recommend this place for those who want to have the experience of the jungle. Profile Log in.

Nature freak paradise - Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Danum Valley Conservation Area
Sounds tempting? Yeah, where else but in the bio-diversity hotspot that is Sabah. But for those who have crossed Mt. Kinabalu off their bucket-list and would like to venture a little further off the beaten path, behold Mt. Kinabalu from the summit.
see url Both mountains are within the Crocker Range, which is the backbone of western Sabah, rising near Tenom in the south and peaking 4. Sabah is known as a beach-bum's delight, and it's something the locals take very seriously. And in between the granite peaks and flamboyant reefs, all things green and grand. With unpredictable blooming seasons and a brief flowering period of only 6 days, Rafflesia flowers are like nice strange smelling surprise gifts from the Borneo rainforest. A short nature trail within the park allows u find out if its your lucky day to see a Raffflesia in its gargantuan bloom.
